Sixth Street COGIC
A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR
Welcome to the Sixth Street Church of God In Christ website. I am glad you have chosen to spend a few moments looking around, discovering our church family. As I describe Sixth Street I like to use words like 'family' and 'community'.
We are a group of people committed to following Jesus. That means we worship him with all your might and joy. That means we encourage prayer in church and throughout life. We love people outside the church through generosity, invitation, and compassion. Our hope is that all people will feel loved and welcomed at Sixth Street COGIC. And once here, we pray that people will meet God and as a result of meeting God, give their lives to Jesus Christ. We want that for you. Come as you are. Check us out, but more importantly, seek the truth of God that can only be known when one knows Jesus.
While you are browsing our website, you will learn about our programs and get a glimpse of who we are, but only a glimpse. To fully understand us, come to a worship service and feel the up-close, in-person fellowship that comes when people share time together with the Holy Spirit present. Enjoy the website, then come. We’d love to meet you and know you.

OUR CHURCH
In 1937, the starting foundation of Sixth Street Church had its humble beginnings in Tensas Parish, a small town of St. Joseph, Louisiana. God sent Sixth Streets' first pastor, Elder Levi Marsaw of Fayette, Mississippi. Sometimes church services seemed so much closer to a more promising future, its denominational attachment that soon became Sixth Street Church of God In Christ. It was still lacking the physical framework of a building for its pastor and members to proceed with their weekly services. They continued singing, fasting, praying and praising God; and in the midst, the Holy Ghost fell upon many of them. Marsaw and Sixth Street members relocated to the town of Ferriday, Louisiana, continuing their fellowship. It was at that moment the Holy Spirit spoke to Elder Levi Marsaw, giving him divine revelation to walk by faith and purchase a plot of land. This land was on the corner of Sixth Street and Carolina Avenue. Hence after, members of Sixth Street recommenced their weekly services of shouting and praising God on a dirt floor. As time passed, Sixth Street COGIC former pastors, the late Elder Perly Osteen, the late Elder Norman Jones, And Elder William C. Anderson continued carrying on the legacy once started by the late Elder Levi Marsaw.
In 1987, Elder Willie, J. Ellis became pastor of Sixth Street Church of God In Christ. Elder Ellis, a spirit-filled man of God exemplified, that he had a love for people and kingdom building. In honor of continuing to move this great legacy forward, Pastor Ellis also a man of great faith had a vision to do great things. Despite him facing much opposition, he did not give up. He knew that it was truly God's voice speaking to him. He had a plan, purpose and drive to do God's will. By following the vision, godly spiritual consultation and the power of prayer, our prayers were answered. The pastor and members of the church obtained a fifteen-year mortgage. With less than twenty church members, the church debt was paid off in less than 1/3 of its anticipated time. The new church was completed in 1996.
